These are the still pix of the Nurse Shark laying on top of the pin fish trap! See video below! This trap is under water, the tide is out but you can see how clear the water is! 4-5 feet deep

The Nurse shark is my favorite! Skin feels like leather & word has it they are good to eat! Just never know what you are going to see here in paradise... Awesome!!

My friends Bill & Sherry came to visit us here in the Keys! We had a great time just not long enough! We went to the Dolphin Research center in Islamorada & enjoyed watching the momma & baby play, little did we know the fun was just beginning! After that we made our way back down to Big Pine Key to Boondocks bar/grill for dinner, then headed home! Traffic was stopped just before the bridge due to an accident so we turned around & headed back to Boondocks to wait it out! It was maybe around 5pm?? After a while we got back on the road & made it to the birdge & traffic was stopped!! No turning around on the bridge so there we were! STUCK! Sadly there were fatilities so we finally arrived home close to 10pm! It gave us time to visit & I cant think of anyone I would rather be stranded with!
The ending was great because the skies cleared enough for Bill/Sherry to see the SOUTHERN CROSS constellation! What a wonderful site! Sure enjoyed them being here!

Warm and cozy glow coming from my Betelgeuse lamp!! Thanks again my Jim Bird! Awesome...

BETELGEUSE LAMP!

This beautiful Betelgeuse lamp was made for me by my dearest friend Jim Bird! He started this in Aug. 2008 and I had no idea he had taken on the Beautiful Betelgeuse Lamp project until he sent an email picture of the finished lamp! The photo he crafted on a piece of tile, and the light sets in copper tubing which came from Seaside Oregon. The tube support is made from Poplar & Oak woods which he glued together giving it the wave effect. The glass ball he made in Lincoln City Oregon at a Glass blowing shop where you can blow your own floats! Jim took thier idea and added his own idea which was to leave the end open for light & add his own colors! The sunsets here are so wonderful & I believe Jim captured that in the colors of the ball!

Now you see the finished project and how beautiful it is! Everyone that sees it wants to buy one! In the evenings the glow that it puts out is awesome!

This is a dead or dying fish here at the marina! There were many of them & it is due to the cold spell we just had! All the ones that I saw were pin fish and they had dark spots on them! Frostbite maybe? The wind chill had us down to the high 30's a couple of nights! For down here that is just CRAZY!!!

Manatees are PROTECTED, it is illegal to feed/water or harrass in any way! These are pictures of the damage that fishingline can do when its not properly disposed of! I called the FWC & the Turtle Hospital of Marathon & they came so fast to assess the poor Manatee! We gave her water to keep her close to the boat and they tried to cut the line but could not get it off! Click on the pix to get close up views! Its a shame how careless humans can be! Later she swam off & I have not seen her since...

All the Marina folks watched the Boot Key Harbor Boat parade from the Fuel Dock and then went to Willems World for dinner! What a wonderful night!

The Santa Sleigh was in the boat parade & I think it was the BEST!! Maybe next year we dress up Betelgeuse and join in the fun!

This has been a real pain! Sounded like fun at first but let me tell you stripping, sanding & re-staining teak is far from fun! But how nice it looks when its finished! This is only one coat and we have 5 more to go! It has taken a while due to weather and sometimes just plain ol lack of ambition! HAHA
We had to tear out all the plumbing pipes on Thanksgiving because they were old & clogged! Thats all we will say about that! uuuggghhh
After the stainging is done we move on to painting the boat!
Oh yes I forgot to mention the anchor post rotted as well!! That is gona be some major bucks to repair!!
This is all okay by me because I am so happy living here in the Keys and on my Betelgeuse!

What a Storm!

Early morning wake-up to survey the damage and this is what I saw! This guys fishing boat sunk! I love the picture of the two guys scratching heads! No names mentioned here! Our dinghy was full to the top of water but it didnt sink. We had some leaks in the boat but no more than normal. One of the marina gals had all of her shoes in a crate on the dock and we are guessing they are in Cuba by now! More damage done in the marina was ripped canvass bent bow sprit dinghys under water.
It was a heck of a storm and looks like it is not over yet!

There were alot of body painted people & lots of wonderful costumes! The Parade was great, they threw beads & everyone got plenty! They estimated there were 70,000 people & that is pretty close!

So if you are in Key West during Fantasy Fest, ya gota go at least once! WOW!

The same day we had the Water Spout at the marina, there was a lightning bolt that struck so close to the fuel dock I felt teh electricity run up my arm and it blew the gas nozzel I was holding clean out of my hand! First thing I did was wiggle my toes to be sure I was still alive! Yep, I am still kicking!!! Yee Haw!!

Swordfish Steaks!

This is the largest chunk of fish that I have ever cooked! Notice I did not say caught! Our neighbors here in the marina gave this to us today! This swordfish was huge! We watched as they drug it across the dock, snapped off the sword, (show n tell) then cut these beautiful steaks!
Those that know me well, know I hate to cook & do not know much about it, but despite myself it turned out good!

Aren't these great shots! I was standing on Betelgeuse when I took them! Just amazing! Only lasted about five minutes and never got close, thank goodness!
I did not get pix of the one before that and it was very close! I was pumping fuel when I looked over & saw the water churning just like it was bubbling hot and the noise sounded like a hard rain, then it moved over the palm trees and they were swaying back & forth, just an erie sight! Didnt have time to grab the camera, dang it...

We have had lots of thunder & lightning but very little rain. You can see it coming then the sky clears just above us! I sure hope the same will happen with hurricane season!!

This is the air conditioner pump! DEAD!!! After we just paid out $600.00 plus to repair the AC, the stupid pump quits! Nothing is ever easy! The temp today is 88 with heat index 96 and we all know the humidity is 200%!
All you can do is laugh! It was very hot trying to sleep with no wind! Yep, that right, no wind!! We have had nothing but wind for THREE months down here & now NOTHING! HAHA
Thats okay at least it is not raining! I still love my boat! With or without AC!

Fresh catch of the day! This is a nice size Dolphin that was given to me as a tip on the fuel dock! Hey, that worked for me! Yummy... Got some nice fillets despite myself! My filletiing skills could use some work! I put this in foil covered in lemon juice & Italian dressing, onions & mushrooms and lemon pepper seasoning and less than 20 minutes dinner was was ready! Now thats how I like to cook!

Time to re-do the stain on everything! Never realized how much wood is on this boat until I started scraping it off! This is a pix of the V-birth hatch before with the grate on. Stripped & then re-stained, still have to put the grate back on but it looks so much better! Thats why I have not uploaded more pix on my blog! Work, work, work!!! I still love every minute of it!

This huge casino boat was headed to our fuel dock & I was taking pix to show the size of the boat! But what I captured was the huge casino boat hitting the 100 foot motor yacht "Prestige Lady" that is at the end of our T Dock! WOW! The noise was horrible.
I guess the wind caught the old casino boat & just pushed him right into the Prestige Lady! The captain & owners were on board and saw the whole incident playing out! Scary...
As you can see by the pix how huge the casino boat is as they go bow to bow! Serious damage but at least they are still afloat!!
Never a dull moment here at the marina!

This is Captain Tom & his First Mate Joy! They took me out for a sail on their 28ft Pearson sailboat for a day sail! This was the first sail for me & let me tell ya when they shut that motor down & raised the sails, my heart skipped a beat! Then we were off with the wind! Oh my, what a wonderful ride! So much different than our Trawler. The wind was about 15 knots and we went out to sea for a three hours sail! Dept was at 290 feet. Perfect! It was alot of work but well worth it, especially since all I did was watch. The wind died down on the trip home so we motored back. I loved it!

I went to the west dock & took this picture to show how we have spent our Winter months! On our Starboard side is a Carver with Bill & Patti on board! They are from Texas! Yee Haw! Great neighbors, always laughing & smiling!
On the Port side is Joe & Janice, from Florida in their Gulf Star! What a hoot! I have laughed the loudest & hardest with them! At first I was concerned that we were gona be sandwiched in by these two big boats, but as it turned out, I think I have the best neighbors in the whole marina! As the season comes to an end, I will be sad to see them leave! For some reason, no one wants to stick around for the hurricane season!

Richard & I have joined a band and these are our new outfits! Scary... The roots on this tree are the biggest I have ever seen! We drove down (hour drive) & took our bikes so we could ride the city! I never get tired of Key West! Roosters, cats, and crazy people everywhere gives Key West it charm. Favorite part of the day was lunch! Oysters on the half shell with a cold Bloody Mary and life is good!!

What a fun time! Much bigger than I expected, didn't eat any seafood because the lines were so long so we just drank the warm beer & listened to the Mile Marker 24 Band! They were very good!

Fresh catch of the day is Snapper! Our friends Gary & Sally caught these and pass them to us! We cleaned them & gave them to our neighbors, Joe & Janice & they cooked them up! Some one had suggested cooking on shingles for that smoked wood taste, so thats what we did! They tasted great but the cooking time was VERY long so not sure I would recommend it! Joe had the seasoning going on & Janice got stuck doing all the dishes! It was a great meal & we are so lucky to have the bestest marina friends!!

Something out of the movies watching the ships roll in... It stayed all day!! Close to 5pm before it finally rolled back out to sea! No tellin what it left behind????

Aint she a beauty!! This is an 85 foot 1935 Trumpy! She is a charter boat that frequents our marina. Dick, Gerry & I were happy to come aboard!
Captain Bill was kind enough to let Chef Cindy (top pic) have an open house for those of us here in the marina! Chef Cindy made everyone welcome with some rum punch and her wonderful attitude as she shared her knowledge & love of her home away from home! They are joined by another crew member Andie and the three of them add such character to the boat! We also had the pleasure of being serenaded as the sun melted into the sea by our local marina Conch blowers! You can google the Enticer to see full specs of the boat as well as Charter info.

Check out all those one dollar bills hanging from the ceiling! They covered the entire inside room! Every where you look , there is money! This is the No Name Pub on Big Pine Key! They serve Pizza & let me tell you it was the best pizza I have ever had! Perfect... They are busy all the time & we still had great service! After dinner we drove down the road to see the Key deer! My friends Dickster & Gerry are visiting from Texas & taking in all the sites in the Keys!

Cold Front!

This is what cold looks like! Yes Richard is setting IN the boat! I think the temp was 60 with the winds blowing from north! HAHA There are a couple of fronts headed our way & temp should get down to 49! Guess Richard will get out the nose mittens!

Okay I know everyone gets tired of sunset pics but this was the best yet! At the marina some of the boaters blow the conch shells when the sun sets & so I have been practicing, right now I sound like a wounded cat! Also just as the sunsets if you watch close, there is a green flash! Some folks have seen it and some have not! I SAW IT!!! Coolest thing ever! Cant seem to get it on film but I will keep trying! ENJOY...

Old Seven Mile Bridge!

Every now & then I get a burst of energy & ride the Old Seven Mile bridge! It is a beautiful ride and is 3 miles from our boat to the end of the bridge. No vehicles aallowed so unlike the ride to town it is much safer! Top pic shows the begining & bottom shows the end that stops at the Pigeon Key Museum, which I have never been in! Some day...Look close & you can see the New Seven Mile bridge running along side.

Well this poor fella for some reason got out of the channel & ran aground! This was right in front of the fuel dock. Here comes Boat US to the rescue! Took him 5 seconds to pull him off!
I know that stuck feeling all to well!

Hairy Kayak!

Did ya ever think a kayak could grow hair! This is about a months worth of growth & it sure would slow ya down! Somebody said if you put desitin (diaper rash) on the bottom it would slow the growth! Due to the high content of zinc I think! I am just glad Richard had to clean that stuff off! Yuck! This is why we have the bottom of the boat cleaned every month or so.
